The “Knot” originated from the Rope measuring behind the Stern. In some sailing ships, speed was measured by casting the log from the stern. The log was a type of wooden marker that was relatively immobile, and attached by line to a reel. The rope then had a series of “knots” . The Knots were placed over time at a standard distance for measurement. The rope would then pass through the sailors hands and time was measured via sand hour glass timing at 28 seconds. Then the Sailor would pull the rope and count the knots. Over time the knots became placed at a distance of 47 feet and 3 inches. The knot count would be reported and used in the sailing master’s navigation. This corresponds now to the globally used “knot” or Nautical Mile, which is about 1.15 MPH in Land terms. It was rounded then, and even the 1.15 is a bit off as a Nautical Mile is 6.072 feet vs. a 5,280 feet statute mile. So there is an origin of the word “Knot” from Comegys Marine Insurance.

Nautical miles originated, as do so much of American lingo, from naval terms. The nautical mile was based on the circumference of the earth at the equator. Since the earth is 360 degrees of longitude around, and degrees are broken into 60 so-called “minutes”, that means there are 360 * 60 = 21,600 “minutes” of longitude around the earth. This was taken as the basis for the nautical mile. So that means that 1 Minute of longitude is equal to 1 nautical mile. So the earth is ideally, by definition, 21,600 nautical miles (and 21,600 “minutes” of longitude) in circumference at the equator. If anyone ever asks you how far is it around the earth, you can quickly do the math in your head (360 degrees * 60 minutes per degree) and answer “about 21,600 nautical miles!”

In fact, even modern navigators use the “minute of latitude” on Nautical charts to measure distance. . For accuracy, however, minutes of latitude are the basis for measuring a Nautical mile. If we used minutes of longitude, the time would change as you got further away from the Equator.

Using the definition of a nautical mile for distance at sea, the challenge was to measure speed — i.e. what is the ship’s speed in nautical miles per hour? The Nautical mile is about 1.15 longer than a mile on land or a statute mile.

So that’s our story and we’re sticking to it. Let us know at Comegys Insurance if you want more Marine trivia.
